Summer is here! Whether it be sunbathing, BBQs, or ice cream—summer is one of the most exciting times of the year. However, while summer may be fun for you, it may not be very fun for your teeth. During this time of the year, people tend to put down their guard regarding dental care. This is why in today’s blog; we will be going over several tips for summer dental care.

Savor Summer Treats with Moderation

With the heat that comes along with the summer season, it is difficult not to crave a cool treat. From ice cream to slushies, it is easy to lose control of your food choices. While it’s totally okay to enjoy these sweet treats, we recommend having them in moderation. You can also balance out these sugary treats with healthier options, such as watermelon and strawberries. Most importantly, remember to brush and floss after enjoying your treat! Basic dental care should never be neglected!

Try to Prevent Dental Accidents

During this time of the year, we often get patients that come in with dental accidents. From spur-of-the-moment baseball games without protective gear to poolside accidents, many patients come in with cracked or broken teeth. When having fun with summer activities, be sure to protect your pearly whites by avoiding reckless activities. Yes, you can have fun, but be careful. Unfortunately, no matter how careful one can be, accidents happen. If you happen to have a dental accident, Carmichael Dentistry is just a call away. We offer emergency dental care services for those unforeseen accidents that could take place during summer.

Stay Hydrated

Did you know that summer is the time of year when people most experience dehydration? It’s incredibly easy to get dehydrated after swimming or walking around in the heat. Besides being bad for your health, dehydration prevents your mouth from producing sufficient salvia. A dry mouth promotes the growth of bacteria. This increases the chances of you developing tooth decay. Don’t let the summer heat get the best of you. Drink plenty of water—we recommend drinking at least 1 liter of water per day.

Use a Straw When Drinking Sugary Drinks

Enjoying a cool soda or a refreshing juice is one of the nicest treats to enjoy in the summer. However, in order to prevent dental issues such as cavities, we recommend enjoying your drink with a straw. Drinking with a straw limits the contact the sweet beverage makes with your teeth. If you happen to have to straw, make sure you drink it relatively fast. Slowly sipping on sugary beverages only helps feed the harmful bacteria in your mouth that chase enamel breaking down—thus leading to tooth decay.
